Names -> Song Titles Not Used as Lyrics -> S

Some songs have titles that aren't used in the lyrics, and end up becoming better known for their lyrics than their title. Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" is better known for the refrain "Everybody must get stoned" than it is for the title.

Comments & Submittor Name
Santana Mother's Daughter The song is clearly a poke at an ex. (girlfriend? wife? succubus?), but the lyrics only paraphrase the title. - princejellyfish
Sarah McLachlan Possession And I would be the one./To hold you down, kiss you so hard./I'll take your breath away,/and after, I'd wipe away your tears/ and close your eyes dear. - Brian Kelly
Savage Garden Affirmation  I believe (THEN THE REST) - LAC
Say Anything Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too "I called her on the phone
And she touched herself
I laughed myself to sleep." - Katy
Seekers The 59th Street Bridge Song Slow down, you move too fast.
You got to make the morning last.
Just kicking down the cobble stones.
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy. - Pat Kenski
Sgt. Barry Sadler Ballad Of The Green Berets Not surprisingly, neither the word "ballad" nor the phrase "ballad of" tend to be found in the lyrics of songs whose titles begin with that phrase. This one might be simply called "The Green Berets", from its obvious subject matter. The opening line, "Fighting soldiers from the sky" might also be cited as an apparent "title", but I suspect that that is less likely. - Thessaly Danes
Shabutie Zut The lyrics are ridiculous, and amazing, but not ridiculous enough to have "Zut" thrown in =] - Katy
Shabutie Strung Short "Well, I’m a snake in the grass, girl.
You better watch out, I might strike.
And I’m hard on running as fast as I can,
and here we go to save the world." - Katy
Shabutie Sarah Lawrence Strikes Back "Hold mine. Hold mine. Hold mine.
Hold mine. Hold merit. Hold mine." - Katy
Shabutie Sarah Lawrence "I miss you. You said you’d be coming home.
To my home, move over to mine, to share.
We’re inside you now.
Well, I’m never going backward or outside, yeah, yeah.
Think about it. Well, this dies tonight." - Katy
Shabutie Disciple's Anthem "Could have sworn that you’d fall,
a beautiful girl whose smiles could cut me."

Cute, yeah? But it never says "Disciple's Anthem" - Katy
Shabutie Camouflage Yes, I caught this stain!
Begins to multiply, whoa!
We echo through this song, yes, and in it's words, I'll rise! - Katy
Shabutie Bloody Brit Song These lyrics are insane, but they NEVER say anything about a bloody Brit. - Katy
Shabutie Ambassador Johnson I've tried listening for it to mention this Ambassador... but no. =] - Katy
Simon & Garfunkel The 59th St. Bridge Song The opening line, "Slow down, you move too fast/got to make the morning last" and "feelin' groovy" are the best-known lines from this 60's tune. The "59th Street Bridge" is actually the span's nickname. It's official name is the Queensboro Bridge, and it connects Long Island City, Queens, with 59th Street in Manhattan over the East River. - MasonR
Simon and Garfunkel El Condor Pasa I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail
Yes I would, if I could, I surely would - Joe H
Sister Janet Mead The Lord's Prayer The classic prayer sung with music; a hit in the US during the 70s - Joe H
The Sleeping Loud and Clear Back, back, back, back through the radio Now who is listening tonight? - Katy
Smashing Pumpkins Where Boys Fear To Tread The title is not mentioned in the song. - Mickey D.
Smashing Pumpkins Ava Adore "It's you that I adore
You'll always be my whore."

Sorry, no Ava. - rocky
Smashing Pumpkins Bullet With Butterfly Wings However, Billy can't seem to get enough of that "Despite all my rage, I'm still just a rat in a cage" line. - Brian Kelly
Smashing Pumpkins Thirty-Three "To make it last forever you" was used as a chorus. But no "thirty-three" was mentioned in the lyrics. - Mickey D.
Smashing Pumpkins Galapogos However, Billy can't seem to get enough of that "I won't deny the pain" line. But a good key. - Mickey D.
Smashing Pumpkins Jellybelly However, Billy can't seem to get enough of that "We're nowhere" line. - Mickey D.
The Smashing Pumpkins Cherub Rock However, Billy can't seem to get enough of that "Let me out" line. Another thing, my imagination is in the version 2 of the video where Billy Corgan and another man plays boxing with each other on the ring. - Mickey D.
Smashing Pumpkins Muzzle "I knew the silence of the world" is sung so many, but no "muzzle" is mentioned. - Mickey D.
Smashing Pumpkins Cupid de Locke Billy Singer did not sing the song title in the song. - Mickey D.
Soilwork Overload Trusting the ways of my vulnerable heart A million times before I get things right. So fragile it hurts when I just fall apart. - Katy

Stars Your Ex-Lover Is Dead There's one thing I want to say so I'll be brave
You were what I wanted, I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save.

A popular You Tube video. I'm not sorry there's nothing to save - Indy
Steely Dan Pretzel Logic Though this is the song that's also the album title, it should be known as "Those Days are gone forever over a long time ago". - Paul Warren
Steve Forbert Romeo's Tune The title wasn't in the lyrics, and the lyrics had nothing to do with Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet". - Bill Medley of Hits
Sting Saint Augustine In Hell Although you hear the h-word at least once, you never hear the name 'Saint Augustine' once in the song. Some would probably know it best from the chorus: 'The minute I saw her face, the second I caught her eye, the minute I touched the flame, I knew it would never die!' - Larcen Tyler
Stone Temple Pilots Sex Type Thing The title implies that the song is about rape, so none of these words appeared in the song. - Rocky Road
Stone Temple Pilots Plush Where are you going for tomorrow? Where are you going with the mask I found? - Brian Kelly
Stone Temple Pilots Big Empty The song itself is empty of the title. - Brian Kelly
Stone Temple Pilots Interstate Love Song "Leaving on a Southern Train" would have been a better title. - Rocky
Strawberry Alarm Clock Pretty Song from Psych-out It is a Pretty Song, but Psych-out is nowhere to be heard! - Paul Warren
Sum 41 Crazy Amanda Bunkface What's so hard about goodbyes? I'm sorry I'm just not as keen On planning out our perfect lives When I'm only 19 - Katy

Become another victim of your conformity
And back down... - Katy

System Of A Down B.Y.O.B. Neither B.Y.O.B. or its definition (Bring Your Own Bomb) is mentioned. - hardrock (or another alias)
