Doobie Brothres, Doobie BrothersBand Name Origins:
- I can hear Mike Hossack jokingly, making a comment about 'being a Doobie Brother' while in the Navy. However, the timing for the formation of the 'original members of the Doobies' (of which Mike wasn't) doesn't jive. I've known many "Doobie Brothers" that had nothing to do with a band. The basement story, of friends burning a joint together and popping out with the comment: "Why don't we call the band The Doobie Brothers?" has never been contested or accredited to anyone else. Therefore, they own the name. I'm pretty sure Bruce Cohn (Doobie's longtime business manager) did his research, after being told by the guys that they decided on The Doobie Brothers. He didn't care for the name, but it was better than PUD after all. Submitted by: Holly Perry
- Hey Bob, If you don't believe that Torok gave Hossack the name all you have to do is ask Mike Hossack. But if they claimed the name illegally on record to the US Patent and Trademark Office, do you think the group would be considered plagiarists? Check out their biography on A&E Channel. Mike tells you himself where the name came from. Submitted by: J.J. Torok

Story about this misheard lyric by: Michelle King I am hearing impaired with 50% of my hearing in my left ear only. Growing up, I always sung the misheard lyrics. While working for a now defunct radio station, they played this song on the overhead speakers. I loved the song so much, I started singing it out loud. To make matters worse, I was the only black person working in the office of white people. Can you imagine the looks on their face? It was HILARIOUS. It finally dawned on me to look up the lyrics on the net and find out that a song I thought was a political anthem against racism was actually a love song. |

Real Places Mentioned in Songs:
"China Grove"
The Lyrics: When the sun comes up on the sleepy little town
Down around San Antone Why: Peter's story about this song is unbelievable. Furthermore, his statement that Bexar County is in southeastern Texas closer to Houston than to San Antonio, is ridiculous as anyone capable of reading a map could discover if they bothered to check it out. China Grove is indeed in Bexar County, BUT SO IS SAN ANTONIO.

| "China Grove"
The Lyrics: When the sun comes up on a sleepy little town Down around San Antone And the folks are risin' for another day 'Round about their homes
The people of the town are strange And they're proud of where they came Well, you're talkin' 'bout China Grove Oh-Oh, China Grove Why: The real town of China Grove, Texas is one of the few (if not the only) places to actually get an unintentional title of a song and shoutout in the song. As the story goes, the Doobie Brothers recorded the song, "China Grove" in late 1972 about "a sleepy little town" near San Antone (San Antonio, Texas also gets a shoutout in the song) without consulting a map of Texas and assuming that their "China Grove" was fictional imagination of the Doobie Brothers' lead singer, guitarist and songwriter, Tom Johnston. When FM Rock radio stations picked up the song and started playing it, it started to become a hit and it became a Top Ten hit on Billboard Magazine's HOT 100 charts and a hugely played one at Top 40 radio stations in 1973. That's when Tom Johnston and the rest of the Doobie Brothers were finally informed and shocked, at first, to learn that China Grove, Texas was actually a town in Bexar County, Texas (southeastern Texas and a bit more closer to Houston, Texas than San Antonio, Texas). (This story is not made up, but really happened). The real China Grove, Texas isn't as much associated with the Far East (in the continent of Asia) as the "China Grove, Texas" in the Doobie Brothers song, though. Also mentioned in the song is the Sun. I have transcribed the first verse and first chorus upabove.
