Story about this misheard lyric by: Wisnu Aji

It makes no sense at all for the lyrical content of this song. It also not related to "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart that also popular at that time. About this song: "Signs" is track #1 on their second studio album, "Good-byes and Butterflies", originally released in 1970. It was written by Les Emmerson. It reaching #3 on Billboard's Pop Chart. Making them their only major hit to date and also entering them into one-hit wonder fame with this song. It also reaching #4 on their native country, Canada. This song was also successfully covered and recorded live by Tesla for their album, "Five Man Acoustical Jam", released in 1990. Their version of "Signs" was reaching #8 on Billboard's Pop Chart. This cover had some minor changes to the lyrical content of this song, which was called an explicit version. However, a studio version, which was also called a clean version, recorded in 2007 used the original lyrics. But, Tesla themselves, was more familiar with their own song, "Love Song". Back to its original band who recorded "Signs" for the first time. The album, "Good-byes and Butterflies", was originally released in 1970. However, because of its controversy, this album was released again in 1971 with different cover art.

Nonsensical Song Lyrics:

"Signs"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
So I jumped on the fence and yelled at the house,
'Hey! What gives you the right?'
'To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in'
Why They're Nonsensical:
There's this little thing called the Constitution. I believe there's something in there about private property rights. But I could be wrong. After all, I'm just a regular person, not a famous rock star.

"Signs"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
If God was here
he'd tell it to your face
'Man, you're some kind of sinner'
Why They're Nonsensical:
God: Even though I'm omniscient and all-knowing, I'm not exactly sure what kind of sinner you are.

Misrhymed Song Lyrics:

"Signs"
The Misrhymed Lyrics:
And the sign said 'anybody caught trespassing would be shot on sight'
So I jumped on the fence and yelled at the house,
'hey what gives you the right?'
To put up a fence to keep me out, or to keep mother nature in
If God was here he'd tell you to your face:
'man you're some kind of sinner!'
Why They're Misrhymed:
'Sinner' not only doesn't rhyme with 'in', it doesn't even have the correct amount of syllables to sound right. 'Man that's some kind of sin' would have worked better.
