If you’re not a dunce,
You’ll catch on at once,
Simple as ABC,
It’s the Rhythm Steps, whoa!
Simple as the day is long!
Yes, the original song is really THAT boastful. First of all, it insults the people who refuse to “dance the Rhythm Steps” by calling them dunces. Second, it calls the dance “simple as ABC”, and uses the exclamation “whoa!” in describing it. And to top it all off the singers exclaim “Simple as the day is long!!” as the very last lyrics that are sung, right before the end, which is completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. A comparison between the length of the day and this obscure dance (two steps forward, one step back) does not tell the 21st-century listener ANYTHING useful about how to actually dance to it. Maybe at the time it was exciting. Nowadays this song is just perfect fodder for AmIRight.

You've never heard of me
Or the weird shit I do and say
That's my favorite thing
That I'm not famous, no
And I'm never on TV
Throwing up on an LA street
Nobody judges me
Cause I'm not famous, no
While AJR might have not been famous when they wrote this song, they're boasting about the fact they're not famous

Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson,
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You're all fakes, run to your mansions
Come around, we'll kick your ass in
Gregg Alexander is boasting here about he thinks he can beat Beck, Hanson, Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson to the top. And then the New Radicals broke up and never released any more material, while the four mentioned continued with success. Swing and a miss!

I'm a fighter, I'm a poet, I'm a preacher
I've been to school, oh baby, I've been the teacher
Jon Bon Jovi was 25 when this song came out so has he really been all those things?

Now, we're Anthrax and we take no s***
And we don't care for writing hits
The sound you hear is what we like
They're boasting about how they don't care about what their listeners think they should do

Somebody said somebody wouldn't last too long
Somebody keeps going strong
Somebody said everybody was all up front
Somebody's still talking junk
They made it. Even though the critics said they wouldn't be the success that they are these days.

I took a trip to the year 3000, This song had gone multi-platinum, everybody bought our seventh album, it had outsold Michael Jackson
Wow, talk about shameless self-promotion by claiming this song would go multi platinum (It only went single platinum) and claiming to outsell Michael Jackson. Guess what? A seventh album never happened and the two albums they did make didn't even get close to album unit's sold by Jackson.
