Misheard Lyrics Stories:

"Send In The Clowns"
Misheard Lyrics:
Don't you love fires?
My fault I fear.
Original Lyrics:
Don't you love farce?
My fault I fear.

Story about this misheard lyric by: Candace Mercer

I'd never listened closely to the whole song before. But I heard it on my car radio, and heard the above lines like the misheard version cited. I didn't think the song was about regretting turning somebody into a pyromaniac, so I thought I must have misheard those lines. I checked a lyrics site and found that indeed, I did mishear them.

Song Parody Fragments:

"Both Sides Now"
Better Lyrics:
Emptied in a giant tub
You get ready to clean and scrub
It always takes more than a rub
I looked at chitlins (chitterlings) that way

But now they come in frozen packs
They all are cleaned and put in stacks
I place them in a grocery sack
Unwanted ones I put back

I looked at chitlins from both sides now
The pre washed clean reveals somehow
It’s chitlins illusions I recall
I really don’t know chitlins at all
Original Lyrics:
Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feathered canyons everywhere
I looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would’ve done
But clouds got in my way

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now from up-and-down and still somehow
It’s clouds illusions I recall

I really don’t know clouds at all

"Both Sides Now "
Better Lyrics:
Better (additional) lyrics to end the song.

Sharp pains right here in my chest
brought on by cardiac arrest.
Falling down and lying there
not breathing any air.
CPR to revive me.
Then on to bypass surgery.
Intensive Care and then some rest
for my recovery.
I've looked at Death from both sides now;
been there and back and still some how
it's Death's illusions I recall
I really don't know Death at all.

Original Lyrics:
Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say I love you right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
Ive looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say Ive changed
Well somethings lost, but somethings gained
In living every day

Ive looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
Its lifes illusions I recall
I really dont know life at all
Ive looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
Its lifes illusions I recall
I really dont know life at all

"Clouds"
Better Lyrics:
Floppy feet and rainbow hair,
Confetti flying through the air,
And seltzer bottles everywhere--
I've looked at clowns that way...
But now they only wreck my fun,
They throw cream pies at everyone--
So many times I'd turn and run,
But clowns got in my way...
I've looked at clowns from both sides now,
In tiny cars, and still somehow
It's clowns on trikes that I recall;
I really don't know clowns...at all.
Original Lyrics:
Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons ev’rywhere
I’ve looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on ev’ryone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It’s clouds' illusions I recall,
I really don’t know clouds at all.

Dirty Song Lyrics:

"Anna Thea"
The Dirty Lyrics:
He will rob you of your flower and he'll hang me from the gallows.
Why They're Dirty:
I was about to present this song once for a school project, but at first didn't understand what the flower had to do with anything. When I asked my mom, she explained that it was a euphemism for her virginity, which led to an 'Oh' moment. I realized that ultimately this song is about a woman who vainly attempts to use sex to bribe a judge from executing her brother.

Upbeat Songs With Depressing Lyrics:

"So Early, Early in the Spring"
The Lyrics:
If the girl is married, then I must go
I swear I'll stay on land no more
I'll sail the seas 'til the day I die
Why:
This song, despite its beautiful, cheery tone is one of the saddest I know, being about a young sailor whose lover betrays him while he is at sea.

"Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?"
The Lyrics:
Once I built a railroad, made it run
Made it race against time
Once I built a railroad, now it's done
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Why:
This is a well known song about unwarranted desperation during the Great Depression, but Ms. Collins treats this song with an upbeat Bossa Nova rhythm, that seems inappropriate.
