Barry McGuire/PF Sloan, Barry MaguireMusic Quotes:
And there was a real shedding of the old dogma, like boundaries of morality were being broken down and everybody was into the new party mode of just loving on each other. Which destroyed thousands of us. I lost 16 of my personal friends through that lifestyle. You know, the music business is like the Lotto. Just put your numbers down and sometimes they hit, and sometimes they don't. There's just no rhyme or reason. Submitted by: LucidLupin

Story about this misheard lyric by: Mean Gene My mother grew up in a small city about 150 miles from Regina, Saskatchewan (rhymes with a female body part, thus sounds similar to Red China in the song). She used to hear this lyric incorrectly and wonder, 'Why is there so much hate there? I live in Regina.' To me, it's a funny story. |
Misrhymed Lyrics:
"Eve of Destruction"
The Misrhymed Lyrics: Think of all the hate there is in Red China,
Then take a look around at Selma, Alabama Why They're Misrhymed: Let's not kid ourselves: 'Red China' and 'Alabama' don't even come close to rhyming. Even for a 60's/folk/protest song, that's a bit of a stretch.

The Misrhymed Lyrics: My bloods so mad, it's like coagulatin'.
I'm sittin' here just contemplatin' then later Think of all the hate there is in Red China! Then take a look around to Selma Alabama ! Why They're Misrhymed: I think the vision for this song was too big for the rhyming dictionary. Regulation, legislation, integration, disintegration ... finding rhymes must have been way 'too frustratin' '

The Dated Lyrics: You're old enough to kill,
but not for voting You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're toting? Why They're Dated: This was written when the voting age was 21 and a young man could be drafted at 18.

| "Eve Of Destruction"
The Lyrics: Think of all the hate there is in Red China Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
Why: "Eve Of Destruction" by folk rocker Barry McGuire was a #1 song in the fall of 1965, and literally one of the first of it's kind -- an anti-Vietnam War song and expresses worry about the continuing escalation of the nuclear arms race between the then Soviet Union and the United States. "The hate in Red China" reference is referencing the Mao violent "Cultural Revolution" that was taking place in the mid-1960's. The "Selma, Alabama" reference is about the civil rights movement that was meeting with stiff and sometimes violent reaction in that area of the country, with one of the more violent places being Selma. The two lines above are the first two lines in the fourth and final verse.
