The Lyrics

Some things never grow old - such as disaster songs and unvaccinated children.
The Western world, is now in Hell a-sliding
Covid Nineteen rampant, economy declining
Fake news make the headlines, the truth is somewhere hiding
You don't believe the Prez, but who else will you be siding?
Riots everywhere, and the nation is dividing
But you can see it, over and over and over again my friend
Nothing's changed now, we're on the eve of destruction

The climate's getting warmer and the hurricanes we're seeing
My country won't get snow, so I've had to quit the skiing
The sea water's rising, Waterworld's the future thing
In Bangladesh, they say, dry earth will be unseeing
Crops are getting poorer and people they are fleeing
But you tell me over and over and over again, my friend
Two-oh-two-oh, we're on the eve of destruction

And in the Eastern world, the mad mullahs they are preaching
They want the Holy War and it's hate what they are teaching
The Russians have learned nothing and the Arabs even less
The whole Middle East is one grand unholy mess
When the reason is gone, emotions dominating
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'
It's plain to see over and over and over again my friend
It's jihad now - we're on the eve of destruction

The generation Z is poorer than their fathers
their future is bleak and unemployment bothers
They don't have that money to buy their own homes
they've given up the hope, now the desperation roams
Common sense is junked in the academia
What is not PC is wrong and anathema
Insanity prevails, when truth is relative-a
Yes, we've made it, over and over and over and over again my friend
We're screwed up, we're on the eve of destruction
we're screwed up, we're on the eve of destruction

Eve of Destruction has always been one of my favorite songs. I have about 30 different versions by different artists in my record and CD collection. Seems so many things are even worse now than in 1965. How are the virus statistics in Finland? I've started to notice more people around my town carrying guns. The price of ammunition is very high and there is not much in the stores. Toilet paper and cleaning supplies are scarce. The Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri is trying to close restaurants, bars and all gatherings such as concerts and sports. Movie theaters have been shut down since March. The new vaccines have to be chilled to a temperature unobtainable outside a laboratory, so I don't know how the authorities are going to distribute it. A lot of people are afraid of side effects which have been seen in other mass-panic vaccines, so they will wait and see what happens to those who do receive it. How is the US election being reported where you are? The media here was all in for Biden. The right wing news says he is senile and will be removed after inauguration. Kamala Harris, who received no support in the Democrat Party primaries will be President. 2021 could be even more scary than 2020. Glad to hear from you again. I've seen your name on Quora and Quizz Club. Staying busy.

Patrick, believe or not, I heard this song today for the first time ever. I immediately found I needed to listen it again and again - and I then thought this piece is timeless, but could be updated. This song is just as actual today as in 1965. Finns have been surprisingly stoic about the coronavirus. The common opinion seems to be that this is the new polio: mostly harmless, usually devious, can be crippling and sometimes even deadly. The usual attitude seems to be: "God gave us this ordeal just like He gave plague in the past centuries, and we are going to endure it as our forefathers did". So far some 370 people have died altogether, and new infections emerge approximately at 100 to 250 daily cases. This is the time when the famous Finnish introversion is an asset. People have restricted their going out from homes to minimum, and they have transferred their social interactions in the Net. People also tend to meet and socialize in isolated places, such as summer resorts, islands or like so that they restrict the contacts to outsiders to minimum, and if they get infected, the infection trace can be tracked. So far we haven't noticed shortages on any commodities, but fuel prices have gone up. The government raised the fuel tax to cover the corona epidemic costs. I am optimistic with the vaccine. Dry ice (solid CO2) sublimates at minus 79 C, so it can be used for chilling. Dry ice is cheap and easily obtainable. There are also two or three other vaccines coming available, and they appear to be less sensitive to temperature. The reporting of the POTUS elections here have been surprisingly objective. The media has also been analyzing the Trump administration, and everyone agrees the undeniable fact is that Trump kept USA out of wars. So let us now see what happens with Biden: his advanced age has been stressed, and it is likely he will remain as a single term president.

The number of deaths from the virus has only recently exceded the number of people who have died from shootings in Kansas City, Missouri. Most of the deaths in Kansas City, Kansas were in one poorly operated nursing home for the elderly. That was about half the total deaths for the whole state. It sounds as though Finns are taking precautions on their own accord. Here, the government issues orders and many people ignore them. The politicians are telling people not to visit their families for Thanksgiving holiday. Christmas will probably be the same. Finland has the advantage of small, well-educated and co-operative population. This is the first year I remember the election being marked with riots and gunfire. The deep state is financing the violence to discredit Donald Trump. The election was stolen by Democrat fraud. Nothing will happen to the perpetrators. I can't imagine you have only heard "Eve of Destruction" for the first time today. It was a major hit, but many stations, including the most popular for the teenage market would not play it. When I heard it was banned, that only made me want to listen to it more. The Barry McGuire version was recorded in one take at the studio. Before the engineers could "clean up" the track and release a polished record, a disk jockey got hold of the first recording and played it. Overnight sensation, but very controversial. Look on youtube for versions by The Dickies (2:00) and Tiny Tim (26:00). I've only used this tune once for a parody, another telling of "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". I am pleased to know the Finnish press considers Trump avoiding a new war as a significant achievement. The US press never mentions this. Biden will get us into a war with Iran, at the behest of Israel and Saudi Arabia, who have become unlikely allies. Thanks for reminding me of my first time to hear this song.

Not too surprising to me that Susanna has never heard of it. This song came out 55 years ago and had an anti-Vietnam War message directed at US audiences. The only reason I'm even aware of it is I had older bothers who were in their teen years; the oldest of which who was eligible for the draft in 1966. .... It looks like it had limited airplay in Europe and none in Finland, so why would Susanna have known about it (assuming she was even alive in 1965)

There were French and Italian versions, I believe soon after the original. Both are titled "This Crazy World" (Ce Monde Absurde, & "Questo vecchio mondo loco). I have a copy in Danish called "Jorden i flammar" (The World is on Fire). The German version is an entirely different song on another topic, using the Steve Barri melody. The issues of the time were the Vietnam War, the threat of nuclear annihilation, and the struggle for equal rights in the United States. The French and Italian versions focus on the nuclear war theme, rather than Vietnam or Civil Rights. I've begun to wonder if the Civil Rights movement here would have been marked by so much violence, had it not been going on concurrently with the Viet Nam War. I remember those years well enough, but was fortunately just young enough not to get too personally involved. Susanna, if you are reading these comments, look for "Merry Minuet" by The Kingston Trio.

CML, I was born only in the seventies, and unlike many other protest songs, this song hasn't gotten too much airplay in the Finnish radio stations. But it certainly struck me when I listened it - I immediately felt I need to listen to it again and again. All in all, I really liked the original song!

Yes, he kept USA out of wars because no other allied country wants to deal with his sorry ass.

When you hear those drums at the beginning, the ominous sound draws you in. I felt the same way when I first heard it. It was too "controversial" so the major stations in Kansas City, and around the country would not play it. Barry McGuire is still alive and performing, and he changes the lyrics to reflect new social problems.
