I thought it was a song with either a religious or a blasphemous theme, one extreme or the other, the first few times I heard it. After listening to the rest of the lyrics, I realized it was neither. But even then, and taking into account that he's a Brit, Sheeran seems to go out of the way to make it sound like "cross" rather than "grass".
