Story about this misheard lyric by: Ken Harris

The whole story is dark with overtones of foul play or suicide, but all seems unclear. Listening to the end of the song on old 45 records sounded like she was offering a journal comment of her involvement in Billie Joe's demise. The family would play the end over and over to hear if she was throwing flowers ('them') or people ('men') off the bridge!

"Ode To Billy Joe"
The Lyrics:
Brother married Becky Thompson;
They bought a store in Tupelo.
Why:
Tupelo is a city in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Mississippi. Perhaps it's major claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of Elvis Presley, but that has no obvious tie-in with this song. But since the song refers to a Tallahatchie bridge and there is a Tallahatchie River in northern Mississippi, this Mississippi city is surely what the song must refer to.
