Why They're Dumb:
As most people are aware these days, these lines are really dumb. In the Holy Land shepherds don't keep their sheep in the fields at the beginning of winter--they are, or were in Jesus' time, kept in the folds. I admit that as a kid I sang and heard these lines for years without realizing they didn't sound right.
