The couple’s in Scotland, not courting.
He’s seeking the meaning of the 39 Steps,
Things aren’t bonnie when he finds the lopped-joint man.[2]

’twas then that things started a-going against
Him, ’cause then in moved the creepy “lawmen.”
Each one’s just a stooge; the conspiracy is huge
He and she escape, once more they’re roaming.

A theater then brings them to where a man[3] sings,
And all the secrets he starts peeping.
The lopped-joint man pulls a gun,
Shoots singer, tries to run
But he’s caught. . .couple together sleeping.


[1]Hannay (Robert Donat), who is accused of a murder he did not commit, is handcuffed and taken away by "policemen,” who ask Pamela (Madeleine Carroll, Elsa in “Secret Agent”) to accompany them. Hannay realizes they are agents of the conspiracy when they bypass the nearest police station. Hannay is handcuffed to Pamela while the men try to disperse a flock of sheep blocking the road, but he still manages to escape, dragging the unwilling Pamela along. Before that, he meets a mean crofter (tenant farmer) named John, beast, beats his wife.
