Song Parodies -> "¿Cuanta la Cuenta?"

Original Song Title:

"Guantanamera"

Original Performer:

Traditional

Parody Song Title:

"¿Cuanta la Cuenta?"

Parody Written by:

John A. Barry

The Lyrics

The original lyrics of "Guantanamera" are the opening stanzas of Cuban hero Jose Martí's Versos Sencillos. Martí was a writer and intellectual who died in 1895 fighting for Cuba's independence from Spain. His immensely popular verses were combined with the chorus in a way that suggests the song is addressed to a young woman from Guanta'namo on the southern tip of the island. The version written for Musical Spanish is quite different from the original. The OS, with translation, can be found at http://www.musicalspanish.com/guantanameralyrics.htm
ESTRIBILLO:
¿Cuanta la cuenta? pregunta: ¿Cuanta la cuenta?
¿Cuanta la cuenta? Mi' bolsa no ésta llena.

Si, yo tengo mucho hambre;
Pobre, no tengo dinero.

"Pues, ¿que tú vas a hacer, hombre?
Porque tú eres sin peso."

ESTRIBILLO

No puedo irme en cocina
De esta casa de comidas.

Soy vacío como ánfora,
Pero como, como caballo
Cuando puedo para llenarme.

ESTRIBILLO

Yo coméria un perro
O también una persona,
No importa, tan hambre tengo.

--------------------------------------------

CHORUS
How much is the bill? The question: How much is the bill?
How much is the bill? With bucks my sack ain't filled.

And my gut's also vacated
But I'm broke, got no money.

"Man, what'll you do to abate it,
Your hunger? No dough, no honey."

CHORUS

I cannot go and haunt
The kitchen of this restaurant.

I'm empty as an amphora
But I eat like a horse
To replenish me, when I have recourse.

CHORUS

I'd eat a dog
Or even a person,
No matter; I'm hungry as a hog.
