The Lyrics
"WAR" is "Wins Above Replacement," a way to measure a baseball player's value to his team, regardless of whether he's a pitcher or a "position player." It is used by some fans to justify whether one player is better than another, or whether a player is worthy of election to the Baseball Hall of Fame. There's a problem: It's subjective, not based wholly on facts. Some fans value Wins Above Replacement more than they value actual winning. This needs to stop.
Last night, I had the strangest dream
I never dreamed before.
I dreamed that baseball fans agreed
to put an end to WAR.
I dreamed I saw a mighty room
and the room was filled with guys.
And the paper they were signing said
they preferred RBIs.
They would accept on-base percent
and maybe OPS
but no, not WAR, not that, not more
for it is such a mess.
And the people in the streets below
were dancing 'round and 'round.
And calculators and slide rules
were scattered on the ground.
