The Lyrics

This song was featured in the movie "Lost in Translation", But was a hit for E.C., written by Nick Lowe
As I flick through
This broadcast world
Searching for laughs in the carcass of modern T.V.
I ask myself
Who is this cast?
Is there only lame and stupid society?

And I cringe in horror every year
With each "must watch" brand-new show
What's so funny 'bout unscripted television?
What's so funny 'bout unscripted television?

They just talk on
With stupid lives
My dog and I sleep right through it sometimes
So what are the plots?
Well written and trusted
And where is the quality?
High quality?

Cause each time I tune in every day
Just makes me wanna snore
What's so funny 'bout unscripted television?
What's so funny 'bout unscripted television?

So where are the laughs?
And which star's been busted?
Where is the comedy?
Fun comedy

Cause each time I see "Reality"
Just makes me turn the thing off
What's so funny 'bout unwritten television?
What's so funny 'bout unwritten television?

I feel your pain. The last time I was home (3 years ago) my mother made me watch "Big Brother" with her... :-P The only thing I watch on TV is The O'Reilly Factor and an occasional learning channel program.

Ahhh, this song was ripe of a great parody! "Cancellation Fives"

Rick D - I know THIS original Elvis Costello song and I second your "Reality TV" opinions. 5's. I haven't turned on the TV except to watch a few minutes of a couple Laker road games in a few months . Catch a bit of it when I'm at my Dad's but that's all CNN or 60 minutes (which are more or less OK with me but not anything I'd say is "can't miss").

Art Buchwald, the author of a 1960's book that described television as a wasteland, would agree with this parody.

Why do people bother with such mindless entertainment? That shows what bad taste the populatoin has today. Remember M*A*S*H, All in the Family and The Waltons?

Random button ... my wife and I watched the DVD of "Lost In Translation" recently ... oddly charming movie, it was. Good question here, Rick ... I guess what's funny is how much money the cigar-chompers in the network boardroom save by not paying writer's union rates.

And let me qualify my previous comment: it's funny for the cigar-chompin' network mucky-mucks, but it sure ain't funny for the writers who are being denied opportunities to make some good money.
