Nat King Cole's, "Route 66"
The Lyrics:
It winds from Chicago to LA, More than two thousand miles all the way. Get your kicks on route sixty-six.
Now you go through Saint Looey Joplin, Missouri, And Oklahoma City is mighty pretty, You see Amarillo, Gallup, New Mexico, Flagstaff, Arizona, Don't forget Winona, Kingsman, Barstow, San Bernardino
Won't you get hip to this timely tip. When you make that California trip Get your kicks on route sixty-six.
Why:
Nat King Cole's classic Route 66 (written by Bobby Troup) is a classic jazz # from the early 1950's (although originally released by the King Cole Trio in the late 1940's). It details an old highway that somewhat still exist (in spots) that was the main way people traveled by car from Chicago to Los Angeles before the interstate system that started in the late 1950's by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Highlighted in the tune is Chicago, Los Angeles, Saint Louis, Missouri, Joplin, Missouri, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Texas, Gallup, New Mexico, Flagstaff, Arizona, Winona, Arizona, Kingsman, California, Barstow, California and San Bernardino, California and the state of California itself. Although the route barely exist anymore, the song itself has remained a classic to today and apparently internationally liked. The song itself spawned a TV show of the late 1950's/early 1960's. In the late 1980's, English pop/rock band Depeche Mode would do a remake of "Route 66" and make it a very popular new wave/alternative tune.
