Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> The Ray Charles Singers

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

The Misheard Lyrics:
I'll be lumped, as you're far above me, very far, very far.
I'll be lumped as far as the lovely evening star, evening star.
The Real Lyrics:
'Al di la' says you're far above me, very far, very far.
Al di la, as far as the lovely evening star, evening star.
The Story: I first heard the song on the radio and really struggled trying to make out the phrase at the beginning of each of the first two lines of each verse. I had no luck at first identifying the song from any lyrics site. So I posted a question about it on the amiright messageboards (inthe00s). Another user helped me identify the song, explaining that it was a song of Italian origin, with the phrase 'al di la' left untranslated. That would explain why that phrase can sound obscure in the otherwise English version. - Submitted by: Valerie Cameron
