Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Styx

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Styx's, "Babe"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Babe I'm leaving, I'll say you want again.
And someone try to snot.
I know they feeding but trying to forget.
Before it for a while.
'Cause I'll be lonely without you.
And I'll need your love you see me too.
So, please believe me, my heart is in your hands.
'Cause I'll be missing you.
Babe, I love you.
The Real Lyrics:
Babe I'm leaving, I'll say it once again.
And somehow try to smile.
I know the feeling we're trying to forget.
If only for a while.
'Cause I'll be lonely without you.
And I'll need your love to see me through.
Please believe me, my heart is in your hands.
'Cause I'll be missing you.
Babe, I love you.
The Story: Finally, their entry that their song were sounding like the voice of Air Supply's vocal performed by this Progressive Rock band I posting here. Who would think with these lines? It's a Pop Rock/Soft Rock power ballad about love but I wondering if beside Dennis DeYoung, the main songwriter of this song and lead singer previously of this band, and his lover in the park there are peoples who snoting here. After that, Dennis DeYoung know there are another peoples who talking to previous peoples after snoting but these another peoples are trying to forget that case. That's funny if I'll see this short story? About this song: "Babe" is track #3 on their ninth studio album, "Cornerstone", released on 19 October 1979. It topping Billboard's Pop Chart and Canada chart as well as reaching #3 on Oceania chart and #6 on the UK Singles Chart. Making them one of many biggest hit singles they ever had and one of some singles charting on the UK Singles Chart. The album, "Cornerstone", was the first Pop Rock album where their first eight studio albums were influenced by Progressive Rock and Art Rock. Like their four previous albums, they producing this album themselves. "Cornerstone" became their first Top 5 Billboard's Pop album reaching #2 there and is currently sitting at Double Platinum according to the RIAA. - Submitted by: Wisnu Aji

Styx's, "Come Sail Away"
The Misheard Lyrics:
On board, I'm the captain
Sublime award!
The Real Lyrics:
On board, I'm the captain
So climb aboard.
The Story: In high school, a friend of mine gave me a copy of the live version of this song. For years, I thought these were the lyrics. I thought the phrasing was so poetic. Though the studio version is pretty clear, I always sang along too loud to the radio to hear it. I finally heard it one day, and wondered how many people had heard my 'poetic' version. Listen to the live version some time. I swear I still hear it wrong sometimes! - Submitted by: Kira

The Misheard Lyrics:
Hey, Hey seven in a row day
The Real Lyrics:
Hey, Hey, seven on the rotate
The Story: Although the album theme may be gambling, this song is more about being positive - so I'll stick with my version... for a least 7 in a row days. - Submitted by: vince
Styx's, "Lady"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Touch me, and my trouble abade.
or
Touch me, and my troubles obeyed.
The Real Lyrics:
Touch me, and my troubles all fade.
The Story: My mom and I were listening to a Styx tape that I made in the car, and I'm singing along to 'Lady'. After this line, she goes, 'Ohhh... all fade! For the longest time I've been trying to figure that out for the longest time; I thought it was obeyed'. I had a good laugh out of that. - Submitted by: Wendy
Styx's, "Lights"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Illuminate me carry me away, marry me, marry me
The Real Lyrics:
Illuminate me giving me away, carry me, carry me
The Story: This wasn't misheard by me, rather, by an entire choir and the music transcriber. We were listening to this in class and at the end, a bunch of girls were 'why was he saying 'marry me'?' and made fun of it from then on. Me, being the resident Styx fan, corrected them, saying the correct lyrics, but they didn't care, really. Ended up correcting the music that we had too, because it was quite inaccurate (with 'you see the parade...' instead of 'you seem afraid'). Though in competition, the girls always sang 'carry me away' instead of 'giving me...'. But it was funny how misheard some of the lyrics were. - Submitted by: Froggie
Styx's, "Lorelei"

When that thing kabloralies,
my head turns all around.
The Real Lyrics:
When I think of Lorelei,
my head turns all around.
The Story: I was a fourth grader and loved the song. It was my first attempt to log some lyrics so I could feel cool singing along with the song. When my big brother found my notebook with the misheard lyric, he tried his best to correct the lyric without laughing, but it was too much. - Submitted by: Ric Wade

Quite a bit different, huh? - Submitted by: Litestar
