Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Seal

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Seal's, "A Kiss From A Rose"
The Misheard Lyrics:
There used to be a Graeme Taylor.
The Real Lyrics:
There used to be a greying tower.
The Story: Someone on the Radio 2 website asked why Seal was singing about a potty-mouthed English football manager. - Submitted by: Pickle*
Seal's, "Crazy "
The Misheard Lyrics:
In a scuffle of people
Only some want to fly
'Cause they're not crazy
The Real Lyrics:
In a sky full of people
Only some want to fly
Isn't that crazy?
The Story: I used to think that Seal was using the word "scuffle" as a kind of term for a group; you know, like a school of fish, gaggle of geese, murder of crows, mob of kangaroos, etc. - Submitted by: Al
Seal's, "Crazy"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I remember "Willie Survive"
The Real Lyrics:
But we're never gonna survive.
The Story: There was a 1980s ABC Saturday morning feature called "Willie Survive" about a kid trying to be safe from things that are dangerous to kids while the narrator was "Rapping" the story on his situation. These were 1 minute long and ran for a couple of years on ABC on Saturday Mornings. - Submitted by: Gabe
Seal's, "Crazy"
The Misheard Lyrics:
In a scar full of people, only some want to fly
Here's a map, crazy
In a war full of people, only some want to fly
Use a map, crazy.
The Real Lyrics:
In a sky full of people, only some want to fly
Isn't that crazy?
In a world full of people, only some want to fly
Isn't that crazy?
The Story: I thought he was saying that you need a map to get to Heaven. I had always thought that this song had religious underlying meanings, so it made sense. I guess I am wrong. - Submitted by: Homey The Clown
Seal's, "Fly Like An Eagle"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Fly like an eko
The Real Lyrics:
Fly like an eagle
The Story: I was in junior high when this song became popular. In English class, we were reading this science fiction novel about the future. (I cannot remember anything about the plot except that there was this mythical new species of people in the future called ekoes.) Anyway, I remember thinking, "Wow, how did Seal know that we were reading this novel about Ekoes? That is so cool!" I absolutely couldn't connect the fact that the title of the song was 'Fly Like An Eagle' with my misheard chorus! Eventually, it did 'click' in my mind. I always get a good laugh out of this story now. - Submitted by: Miss M
Seal's, "Kiss From A Rose"
The Misheard Lyrics:
A kiss from a rose on the brink
The Real Lyrics:
A kiss from a rose on the grave
The Story: I tried so hard to figure out what that would mean... - Submitted by: Ewan
Seal's, "Kiss From A Rose"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Baby, I compare you to a hiss from a cat I must slay.
The Real Lyrics:
Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey.
The Story: My older brother detested this band and actually sung these lyrics purposely. I, unfortunatley, never knew that was so. I went around singing 'hiss from a cat I must slay' for two months. - Submitted by: LeCynic
Seal's, "Kiss From A Rose"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I've been kissed by the nose of a pig.
The Real Lyrics:
I've been kissed by a rose on the pink.
The Story: It took me weeks to even come up with what this lyric COULD be. I had no freakin' idea. Then I thought I got that out of it, and figured he belonged to PETA or something. =) - Submitted by: David Roth
Seal's, "Kiss From A Rose"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Kiss from a rose on the bridge.
or
Kiss from a rose on the grave.
The Real Lyrics:
Kiss from a rose on the grey.
The Story: My friend said she though it said 'rose on the bridge'. So I laughed at her and told her, 'Everyone knows it's rose on the grave!!!!'. I looked it up to show her, but then discovered that it's actually 'rose on the grey'. I will never mock her again. Probably. - Submitted by: Linz
Seal's, "Kiss from a Rose"
The Misheard Lyrics:
A kiss on the nose from a grape
The Real Lyrics:
A kiss from a rose on the grey.
The Story: From my two young kids - Submitted by: Trina
Seal's, "Kiss from a Rose"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Rockapella to a kiss from a rose on the grave
The Real Lyrics:
I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray
The Story: I always kept hearing "Rockapella", the band that sang the theme song to Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?. I also thought how many hear "grave" instead of "gray". - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Seal's, "Prayer For The Dying"
The Misheard Lyrics:
There is a fire and not Edinburgh.
The Real Lyrics:
Playing with fire, and not getting burned.
The Story: It was the quite embarassing time, when I learned my first English at school. (My mother tongue is German.) I misheard almost every English song on the radio. Later, I realized, what the meaning of the song was and that Seal didn't sing a song about Edinburgh. - Submitted by: George V.
