Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Del Shannon

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Del Shannon's, "Hats Off To Larry"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Pants off to Larry!
The Real Lyrics:
Hats off to Larry!
The Story: My nephew Lucas was probably about 6 years old when my brother heard him singing along with the radio on the oldies station, 'Pants off to Larry'. It's one we've never forgotten. - Submitted by: Ricky D.
Del Shannon's, "Runaway"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I'm a walkin in the rain
To go bowlin' and I feel the pain.
The Real Lyrics:
I'm a-walkin' in the rain
Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain.
The Story: At 14, I thought it was a stupid song. He only wants his girlfriend back so he'll have someone to go bowling with. Thirty years later, I heard the song on better equipment, and the light went on. - Submitted by: Vicki Perkins
Del Shannon's, "Runaway"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I'm a walkin' in the rain,
Trip and fall and I feel the pain
The Real Lyrics:
I'm a walkin' in the rain,
Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain
The Story: I botched this song when trying to sing it on karaoke several years ago. I thought I knew the right lyrics, so I didn't look at the screen during the chorus. I only realized my mistake when the second chorus came up, and I realized I'd sung the wrong lyrics the first time. Fortunately, the audience was small that evening... - Submitted by: the man

I'm a walkin' new Marine

The Real Lyrics:
I'm a-walkin' in the rain
Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain
The Story: This was the only lyric I couldn't make out. I always assumed Del Shannon was actually a U.S. Marine from the Philippines because of this misheard lyric. - Submitted by: Chris Bodily TM
