Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
This page contains all the misheard lyrics for Carrie that have been submitted to this site and the old collection from inthe80s started in 1996.

Baby we'll meet again.
Maybe we'll meet again.
Can't read, can't read, things will change.
Carrie, Carrie, things they change.
Carrie had a date with the wrong kind of fate
It's plain to see
Another missing person
One of many, we are sure
The young wear their freedom
Like cheaper fuel
(It's useless information)
Return to my car
(A helpless situation)
You're nothing at all
You're just another message on a payphone wall
Carrie had a date with her own kind of fate
It's plain to see
Another missing person
One of many we assume
The young wear their freedom
Like cheap perfume
(It's useless information)
Returning my call
(To help the situation)
They've nothing at all
You're just another message on a payphone wall
I've listened to this several times now, and I can't hear he sings anything other than "like cheaper fuel" - and I've always thought he sang nothing else. Other people have confirmed what I hear. An Iranian oil strike in late 1978 lead to the early 1979 oil crisis where fuel prices rose considerably - it could be that was on Cliff's mind when he recorded this at the time. Being British, he would pronounce perfume as 'PER-fume', so it would be hard to sing it differently. Anyway, the young using up their freedom like cheap fuel sounds so plaintive and so very much better. (He mouths like 'cheap per-fume' in the video, but this was recorded after the fact). Of course I also much prefer my lyric "Carrie had a date with the wrong kind of fate - It's plain to see" - this complements the dark tone of the song much better as well.
If I tell my folks
If I telephoned
Maybe we'll be again
Maybe we'll meet again
Maybe we'll leave again
or
Maybe we'll breathe again
Maybe we'll meet again
Things mat crange
Things they change
When lights go down, I see Norwegians.
When lights go down, I see no reason.
