Story about this misheard lyric by: Simon

I have looked at the lyrics at every site I could find that publishes lyrics on the Internet, and they all have this wrong. But the lyrics on these sites are not official--except in cases where the official lyrics are readily available (some record albums used to include a sheet with the lyrics, or show the lyrics on the back cover of the album). They are submitted by people who have heard the song and think that they know the lyrics. Lyrics are frequently either submitted to different sites more than once by the same person, or copied by another person and submitted.
The words ice and eyes are both one syllable; nonetheless, when spoken or sung with emphasis on the "i" in ice or the "ey" in eyes, the words are pretty much indistinguishable.
This is unfortunate, because the correct line is sort of a double joke. As we see in the two prior lines, Bobby Taylor has asked Mrs. Johnson for a date seven times. There's nothing wrong with asking a widow for a date. However, the correct lyrics make fun of this in two ways. The first is that, in the following line, we see that Bobby Taylor is married, as the line begins "Mrs. Taylor." The second is that Mrs. Taylor, his wife, "sure seems to use a lot of EYES whenever he's away." There used to be an expression when I was a kid called "making eyes at a person." It meant that you were romantically interested in the person you were :"making eyes" at. So not only is Bobby Taylor a married man who's asking a woman for a date (joke number one), but also his wife is making eyes at people whenever he's away (joke number two). They're both cheating, or attempting to cheat! Or, maybe they're in an open relationship.
Also, note that "sure seems to use a lot of ice" makes no sense in this context. There is even someone who, in a Reddit threat, asks about this line saying that he/she doesn't understand what this means.

Misrhymed Song Lyrics:

There are so many. She rhymes 'wife' with 'high', 'noon' with 'room', 'date' with 'away'. But I think the most flagrant was when she tried to make 'high' rhyme with 'wild'.
