I'd always thought it involved a sadness that the girl was interested in another girl rather than the (male) writer... In fairness, the charming Ms Gilberto's accent made that particular word a challenge to discern. And yes, I know what a direct object is! But (..."Not at 'him'") doesn't rhyme with 'sea'!
