Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin', into the future
Think about it. Time, by its nature, slips into the past, not the future!

Big ol' jet airliner
Don't carry me too far away
Big ol' jet airliner
'Cause it's here that I've got to stay
If you've got to stay, what are you doing on an airplane? I like many Steve Miller Band songs, but the chorus doesn't seem to make sense to me.

The question to everyone's answer
Is usually asked from within
It would seem that he was really trying to say, "The answer to everyone's question is usually found from within." If you have the answer, is it really necessary to ask the question?

They went down to, ooh-ooh, El Paso
That's where they ran into a great big hass-o
Billy Joe shot a man while robbin' his cass-o
That's just trying too hard to rhyme, gotta call that one.

'Cause I speak of the Pompatus of love
Ever since I first heard this song I always wondered what a Pompatus was, and hence this line made no sense to me. Turns out, it's a neologism originating from "The Letter", a 1954 song by The Medallions. The lines "Oh my darling, let me whisper / sweet words of pizmotality / and discuss the puppetutes of love," which contain this reference, were apparently a description of that songwriter's dream woman. And when Steve Miller wrote "The Joker", he made reference to this, like he often does with most of his songwriting, to demonstrate R&B influences.
