Surely if you were really vain you'd never think this song was about you, as it's really critical of its subject? If you were so vain, you'd never have enough self-awareness to realise you were vain, but would surely assume this song was about someone who thought they were as good as you but wasn't.

It *obviously* is about 'you'! What else would it be about? duh! I for one find this especially humorous, as I can't help but feel that Carly Simon is singing it to *herself*, which makes for a hilarious paradox.
