Why They're Nonsensical:
Lake Shasta and Kern River are both in California. But they scarcely get within 400 miles of each other, if that. Lake Shasta is in far northern California, while Kern River is pretty deep into southern California. So which will it be, Merle? Will you stay at Lake Shasta, or will you maybe cross Kern River on the highway again?
