Why They're Nonsensical:
If you ask me, this is completely incomprehensible without the explanation. The 'dog' refers to the dog star Sirius, which remains fixed in the night sky and thus is useful for navigation.

I agree wholeheartedly with the thesis, but not with Godzilla as an example from history. He's the title character from a film, so I don't think he appropriately fits in with the context.
