If I had a dollar, I might give you 99.
This line could also be deemed ambiguous; although most people would interpret the "99" as "99 cents", given that 100 cents equals a dollar. Chris Barron doesn't exactly specify what the number refers to. It could theoretically mean "99 dollars", since he says "if I had a dollar" in the sentence.

If I had a dollar, I might give you ninety-nine.
But the person Chris Barron is singing to didn't ask if he had a dollar. What's more, it's not certain if he has a dollar in the form of pennies, or a $1 bill, or coins with no pennies involved. That being said, he can't give out 99 cents unless he has some pennies (or 100 total pennies, in which case he *could* give the person *exactly* 99 *cents*).
