The whole song is about a guy who's lost a race (and is, in fact, in dead-last position), but he still wants to actually cross the finish line. also, a couple of lyrics just before the ones above says, "the fans get up and they get out of town/the arena is empty, except for one man..." uhh, if everyone else has left, why don't you? it's just the image of some guy still racing even when the winners have been declared and everyone's left.
