Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Once upon a time I started studying Portuguese
I had just a fairly good teacher and book
As I knew already Spanish, I found it very similar
but there was just one strange letter to look:

Where is cedilha?
Where is cedilha?
Ai! Onde fica esse estranho ce?
I've tried the control-c-x and escape-ZZ just as well
Podes achar a cedilha por me?

Pronouncing nasal vowels and all those diff'rent sibilants
may be a task that will make you scare
But while I look my keyboard and while I find the tilde - still
key of the C looks so plain and so bare

Where is cedilha?
Where is cedilha?
Ai! Onde fica esse estranho ce?
It's not the alt-shift C nor the control-comma-C - oh well...
Podes achar a cedilha por me?

Now with the pen and paper it's not at all that difficult
just make sure of your cees and your zeds
But when you type with keyboard it's sometimes a bit frustrating -
Maybe I really should use double-S ?

Where is cedilha?
Where is cedilha?
Ai! Onde fica esse estranho ce?
Now I think I found it - it's alt-one-three-five (number pad!)
Eu achava a cedilha por me!
Alt - 1 - 3 - 5 indeed produces ç - but only on the number pad, not on the main keyboard.

I can't get it to work, but 5's anyway. If I could get the cedilha, it would come in handy with my French.

As a fellow linguist I can commiserate with the need for odd characters...maybe I should be the one to do a parody about the pitfalls of Swedish or Old Norse, as two good parodists have already covered French and Portuguese. 5's all round!

I love punctuation parodies! We once toyed with the idea of "My Cedilla" for D.W. Stevenson's "My Maria" but it never got off the ground... :-)
