The Lyrics

What do a late-night sleepover, an overtired girl, an early-morning newspaper route and a missed-throw newspaper have in common? (“Hey! My window!”) A fast-breaking news story.
Sing, (Start in to sing, you’ll have to swing,)
Then, you’ll swing, (Start in to sing, you’ll have to swing,)
That Thompson is bound to get you,

Oh, (Turn on the heat, then beat your feet,)
Don’t go slow, (Turn on the heat, then beat your feet,)
That Thompson is bound to get you,

Thompson, Thompson, Thompson, Thompson, Thompson…mmm...

(female vocal)

Window Steps,
Start in to break, a window you’re breaking,
Window Steps,
Anger that nice old man, Mr. Thompson,

Last night, see,
Stay-up-late sensation, (dee-de-oh!)
Say sorry,
Mr. Thompson deserves an apology,

Window Steps,
Once you break it, you spend your allowance,
Window Steps,
Newspaper thrown, ‘cause everyone knows that

If you’re not a dunce,
Oh, you’ll catch on at once,
Well, pay the price, say “Sorry!”,
It’s the Window Steps!

(vocal trio)

Window Steps,
Start in to break, a window you’re breaking,
Window Steps,
Anger that nice old man, Mr. Thompson,

Last night, see,
Stay-up-late sensation, (doo-doo-do-doo!)
Say sorry,
Mr. Thompson deserves an apology,

Window Steps,
Once you break it, you spend your allowance,
Window Steps,
Newspaper thrown, ‘cause everyone knows that

If you’re not a dunce,
You’ll catch on at once,
Pay the price, say “Sorry!”,
It’s the Window Steps, whoa!

Window Steps,
(instrumental call-back)
Window Steps,
(instrumental call-back)

Last night, see,
Stay-up-late sensation, (doo-doo-do-doo!)
Say sorry,
Mr. Thompson deserves an apology,

Window Steps,
(instrumental call-back)
Window Steps,
(instrumental call-back)

If you’re not a dunce,
You’ll catch on at once,
Pay the price, say “Sorry!”,
It’s the Window Steps, whoa!

Simple as the day is long!

THIS IS OUR NEW AL YANKOVICH!!!!!!!!!

Really? Did Al Yankovic just drink a cup of anti-freeze over the weekend, as someone (apparently your monstrously deranged self) claimed you did? Apparently you didn't as about 4 more of these bizarre, non parody parodies have popped up this week ..... BTW, "Traditional" is a category for songs that are long lived and WELL KNOWN that the author's name is irrelevant. It is not meant to be a category for songs so old and obscure that NOBODY remembers them ... even the oldest residents of nursing homes

If I understand the situation correctly (based on a response to someone's questions yesterday), the original poster of these stupid non-parodies has died and some person or persons decided that this song, which brought nothing but antagonism to this site, is now going to be repeated ("reprised" in the original 'tard's words) for a certain amount of time as an homage to G&GBF. This, despite the fact that G&GBF admitted (twice) that he came here with the sole intention of being an annoyance to people who were more or less normal, something he definitely was not. So again, why do we need to see more of this crap? The original author is dead, and these "songs" should be too.
Creeping Irrelevance - February 06, 2024 - Report this comment
That’s correct. Entries of “Rhythm Steps” will continue until the end of this week, after which the song will be retired from this site.

Seems like you're ducking Phil's question. What's the point of continuing to pound this into the ground?
Creeping Irrelevance - February 06, 2024 - Report this comment
As G&GBF originally explained on this site, “the point” is to try to spread awareness about this song, which was virtually unknown until relatively recently. The intention is to get more people interested in this song, which would eventually lead to scholarly research on this song.

Oh, I see. I guess I was just too dazzled by the success he had in getting people hyped up over some long-gone '50s TV episode to notice the subtle approach he used in inundating this site with his daily turd bombings based on a (+/-) 100 year old song. I beg you, please keep us apprised on all the scholarly research your efforts engender.

BTW, this parody is based off a current Progressive Insurance radio ad involving a middle-school girl, sleepovers and a broken window. Anyone else recognize it?
