Interesting side note: Germans considered US shotguns used by the US in WW1 as an "inhumane" weapon and threatened to execute those troops that used it. The US responded by stating it would kill Germans with flamethrowers! Germans issued Drillings to Luftwaffe bomber crews in WW2 as survival weapon. This was a 3 barrel weapon, 2 over, 1 under. The two were shotgun gauge while third was rifle type. In the 1980s, HK experimented with the CAWS auto-shotgun, but I doubt the Heer would have adopted it. Best shotguns made by Italy: Benelli, Franchi, and Beretta. US, Russians, and South Africans use them heavily. Newest US types are AA-12 and M-26 MASS.
