The Lyrics

The Northrop P-61 Black Widow was a mediocre nightfighter that took until 1944 to deploy. It shot down a paltry number of German aircraft in the ETO plus 9 V-1s. It had no effect in the MTO nor India-Burma theater. In the PTO it was effective against Japanese fighters and bombers, but no big score. It also performed some odd duties listed below. Data; 3 seater, 2x Double Wasp radials @ 2000 hp, speed of 365 mph, typical range 940 miles, ceiling of 41,000', and armed with 4x 20mm M-2 cannon plus a barbette with 4x .50 cal MGs. Four pylons for 4000 lbs of ordinance. SCR-720 search radar. 706 produced. One ace...

In the January 1945 Cabanatuan prison raid it performed acrobatic maneuvers to distract Japanese guards as the Rangers attacked and liberated 500 prisoners. The Ki-44 fighter pilot denied the P-61 a kill on August 15, 1945 by diving for the ocean and killing himself. A Black Widow also destroyed a B-29 after the crew bailed to prevent capture of the aircraft's sensitive equipment.

The movie version of the the Cabanatuan raid showed it as a night engagement, no P-61. Not sure if any are still flying. Didn't a few end up as fire-fighters after the war?

The movie plane for The Great Raid" was a Lockheed Hudson, and yeah both the P-61Bs and F-15s (recon versions) were used for fire fighting post-war.
