The Lyrics

If you are old enough you might remember the Lucky's-owned chain of combo department stores and groceries that was Gemco (not an acronym for anything). It was started in 1959 as a membership store that furnished customers with jewelry, clothing, sporting goods, garden supplies, and everything else... but then also added an in-store Lucky's for grocery shopping. When you checked out you were given a number and your cart was taken to the rear dock. You would them pull up and present your number card to a clerk that would bring your groceries to your car and load the trunk for you! This was way before Price Club. It was run from 1959-86. Very profitable for decades it soon came under hostile take-over attempts and Lucky's decided to liquidate the stores in 1986, many of them turned over to Target. A true "Gem" of a concept, it was later surpassed by Price Club, Costco, and Sam's Club...
Now Lucky‘s owned department stores,
And Gemco was the name-o
G-E-M-C-O
G-E-M-C-O
G-E-M-C-O
And Gemco was the name-o

You could buy groceries and much more,
And Gemco was the name-o
(clap)-E-M-C-O
(clap)-E-M-C-O
(clap)-E-M-C-O
And Gemco was the name-o

You had to have a membership card,
And Gemco was the name-o
(clap)-(clap)-M-C-O
(clap)-(clap)-M-C-O
(clap)-(clap)-M-C-O
And Gemco was the name-o

But the benefits they sure went far,
And Gemco was the name-o
(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-C-O
(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-C-O
(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-C-O
And Gemco was the name-o

Pay for groceries and pull in the back,
And Gemco was the name-o
(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-O
(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-O
(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-O
And Gemco was the name-o

Present number and get them all packed,
And Gemco was the name-o
(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-(clap)
(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-(clap)
(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-(clap)-(clap)
A shame that they had to-go

Hmmm... GEMCO, don't think I've ever heard of that store. But here's $555 to shop with there. :-)

I think I bought a pack of gum there once.

I fondly remember the Silo (the Commodore 64 computer I did homework and played games on as a kid, the gigantic MCA projection TV that is in my parents' living room to this day and my old Super Nintendo came from there) and Levitz Home Furnishings, and fear that Sears & Kmart will go the way of Gemco and those two. Pacing isn't too bad, parody is great and semtimental. 4-5-4.

The Mtn View GEMCO's cafe made the best 'egg salad' sandwiches, Sir: . . . I miss 'em to this day! . . . washed down with their FARMER's coffee, too!

For me it was Woolworth's with the grilled cheese snadwich and chicken noodle soup for like $2 in the '70s-early '80s!!! Miss that place and all the cheap candy too :(

I remember when you could get an enchilada dinner at El Chico's for about a buck-fifty! And a buck was considered a huge tip. I miss them days.

Rob and Porfle: For me, the favorite department-store cafe item was a ham and cheese or bologna and cheese hoagie, Granny Goose potato chips and a fountain coke for $3.50 IIRC at the Kmart cafe, or a soft pretzel and fountain coke for $1.09 at Target, in the early/mid 90s. I still get a pretzel or popcorn and a coke at Target to this day.
