The Lyrics

Funny nobody has not yet made this. Too obvious - Red River is the lifeline of northern Viet Nam, and Hanoi is located on its banks.
To that valley they say, we'll be flying
And our target's a bridge at Hanoi -
Now our planes have been loaded with ordnance
in my heart I can still feel no joy

So come and sit on my backseat, do radar
Latch your belts, check your chute and wish well -
We are flying to the Red River Valley
It is same as we flew through the Hell

We'll be facing the North Vietnam Air Force
With their MiGs and their missiles and guns
And there's flak, there are SAMs, there are radars
Everyone willing to fry our buns

So come and sit on my backseat, do radar
Latch your belts, check your chute and wish well -
We are flying to the Red River Valley
It is same as we flew through the Hell

We'll be flying at the level of treetops
No mistakes on height we can afford
Weathermen say it's clear for this morning
It'll be horror and we won't get bored

So come and sit on my backseat, do radar
Latch your belts, check your chute and wish well -
We are flying to the Red River Valley
It is same as we flew through the Hell

To that valley they say we are going,
And many strange sights we there soon will see
Yet those clouds easily grow into thunder
At Hanoi rain and lightnings will be

So come and sit on my backseat, do radar
Latch your belts, check your chute and wish well -
We are flying to the Red River Valley
It is same as we flew through the Hell

Yesterday our Captain flew mission
And he saw never medal he earned.
Many pilots have flown in that valley,
And a number have never returned.

So come and sit on my backseat, do radar
Latch your belts, check your chute and wish well -
We are flying to the Red River Valley
It is same as we flew through the Hell

At this valley we will be refueling
We'll connect tanker plane in mid-air
We'll be large, slow and nice, juicy target
And the MiGs sure won't be playing fair

So come and sit on my backseat, do radar
Latch your belts, check your chute and wish well -
We are flying to the Red River Valley
It is same as we flew through the Hell

Now Hanoi is there looming at the skyline
Flak's so thick you can walk through the sky
Guns are blazing and hot steel is flying
Now that bridge is there and we'll fly by

So come and sit on my backseat, do radar
Latch your belts, check your chute and wish well -
We are flying to the Red River Valley
It is same as we flew through the Hell

So I'll fly through the flak at the target,
Let my bombs and my rockets to go
But our wingman didn't pull out his bomb run
He bought farm, it was fatally low

So come and sit on my backseat, do radar
Latch your belts, check your chute and wish well -
We are flying to the Red River Valley
It is same as we flew through the Hell

From this valley, at last, we are going
And that blip on the radar is SAM;
Now pull high, spin, evade, towards the sunshine
Push out chaff and the flares or we are damned

So come and sit on my backseat, do radar
Latch your belts, check your chute and wish well -
We are flying to the Red River Valley
It is same as we flew through the Hell

To that valley tomorrow we'll be going
And our target again is Hanoi
We'll be loaded with bombs and the ordnance
And my mood is not filled up with joy

So come and sit on my backseat, do radar
Latch your belts, check your chute and wish well -
We are flying to the Red River Valley
It is same as we flew through the Hell

Fine use of this traditional chestnut to recapture the drama of a terrible time..without making political leanings..

Nice you liked it :) I attempted just to capture the horrors of war, and what it does to soldiers and their psyche, without making any statements.

Very nice Suzanne- 555! Vietnam is not my specialty but one thing that always bugged me was that the US didn't really get the German captured tech into war until Vietnam. In Korea they used basically the same equipment and tech from WW2 while in Vietnam they started to get assault rifles, rocket weapons, use of helos, and other things the Germans used in WW2 or had contemplated. The assault helo was one of those mixed with gunpods, unguided ATG rockets, etc...

Brought back many memories and a few tears. Thanks for the lyrics, To all the men of the 355 TFW you will never be forgotten as long as I am alive. God bless them and their families.

The F-105 always was an odd bird to me. Was to be a nuclear strike aircraft with a B28IN nuke in a bay but turned fighter-bomber. Due to lack of fighters after the F-100, the poor F-105 had to carry 3 tons of bombs and 900 gallons of extra fuel in pods. It was jumped by MiGs and even when a MiG was ahead, the pilot had to switch the Vulcan gun on. Many forgot. The bird also demanded high maintenance and had numerous bugs to work out. Although possessing long range, using afterburner to lose MiGs meant constant refueling. F-4s worked out better. Half of all F-105 production was lost in Vietnam. Took a lot of damage, but also were shot down.

Can anyone help me with the lyrics to the song they are singing on this youtube video? It's the Red River Valley melody with altered lyrics for the F105 fighter pilots of the 388 Tactical Fighter Wing. 421st The Fighting Cavalier Squadron. 0:02 first versus 3:45 last versus Lyrics. Come and sit by my side at the briefing. We must sit there and take ...? Then we'll head for the Red River Valley. And today I'll be flying Tikrit. To the Valley he said he was flying. ...to be earned. Many Jockies have flown to the valley. And the numbers have never returned? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvevElwHe1k
