The Lyrics

If you are unaware of the disgusting fight that prematurely ended the annual Cincinnati Crosstown Shootout basketball game between the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University, then for heaven's sake DON'T look it up now. Let it be said that both teams dishonored themselves, their schools, their fans, the rivalry, and all college athletics. Two especially low points - U.C. player Yancy Gates decking and bloodying Xavier's Kenny Frease with a blindside sucker punch, and Xavier star Tu Holloway's postgame interview where he bragged about "zipping them up" and boasted that Xavier players were "gangstas". Proving their thug cred, BOTH will undoubtedly be high draft picks next year in the N.B.A. ;D

No doubt you've all seen the "Basket-Brawl"
That ended the U.C. - X. game.
I'd thought my old eyes had seen it all,
But this probed new depths of shame.
Is this what college sports have become?
A back alley smackdown and fight?
For 'though this scene was excused by some,
No one there was in the right.

Where were the coaches and referees?
They let all the warnings go by.
So when Gates sucker punched Kenny Frease
He gave both schools a black eye.
But yet more chilling than players inflamed
Or bloody fists dealing out slugs
Was postgame when Holloway proclaimed
We're gangstas! Don't call us thugs!

With a six game ban big Gates was crunched,
And four games for Tu Holloway.
No sweat! They both got their tickets "punched".
Next stop - straight to N.B.A.
Big money and high life to be had
And lots of fun flaunting the rules.
The pros can act up and strut their bad.
Who needs these chumps in the schools!

As a Greater Cincinnatian (Northern Kentucky) and longtime Xavier fan, I must say that the only person to emerge from this sad affair with honor and credit is U.C. coach Mick Cronin. He confiscated his team's uniforms until they can prove that they deserve their places and scholarships. He brought his offending players before the public for tearful and fearful apologies. If Xavier acts accordingly, I'll renew my loyalty. ;D

Perhaps if the colleges stopped recruiting thugs?

Well done OMR. IMHO, it was the post-game thug-life interview that was more appalling... with the inevitable apology (which was probably forced). 555!

Keep hearing about these sports riots, more and more..local and national...a sign of out times, I guess. Well depicted

Sorry it took me so long to see this one, although I saw the fight the next day. So much for those "Midwestern family values" we hear so much about at Reds games. I don't think Cincinnatians hate Cleveland as much as these 2 teams hate each other, and they don't even have a real football rivalry. Good that several books were thrown at them.
