The Lyrics

This parody dedicated to Susanna Viljanen of Finland. During WW2, the Finns fought 3 wars with mixed results. The first was the Winter War of 1939-40 in which the Soviet conquest was largely defeated by tenacious Finnish fighting, but cost them land and assets. The second was the Continuation War when Germany attacked the USSR in 1941 and which lasted until a 1944 Armistice was signed. Again, the Finns had fought bravely, but with German losses were forced to back-down against the growing and now experienced Red Army that had overwhelming resources. So, more concessions, but Finland remained free. The last was the Lapland War in which the Soviets insisted that the Finns drive the Germans off their territory. The German former ally KNEW the Finnish way of war and subsequently destroyed as much infrastructure as they could while mining vast areas that cost the Finns well into the 1950s!!! Regardless, the Finns fought well and when armed with German weapons were even better. But Germany's losses in territory caused the Finns to sign for peace with the hated Soviets. The Winter War was their first war before becoming a Co-belligerent with Germany.
Soviet invasion of Poland
Agreement with Nazis
Joseph Stalin hungry for conquest
On Finland had his eyes

Talvisota
The Winter War
Finns fought harder
Reds lost much more

Finns were outnumbered in all ways
In tanks, aircraft, and men
Tenaciously they defended
Their people and homeland

Soviets were inexperienced
Suffered from Stalin purges
Finnish defenders were true heroes
Killed those Soviet urges

Talvisota
The Winter War
Finns fought harder
Reds lost much more

The Winter War raged on for months
The Soviets struggled for gains
But the relentless Finns held strong
They had the weather and terrain

The Finns were exhausted by March
Soviets were not pleased either
The countries negotiated
To end this short war for starters

Talvisota
The Winter War
Finns fought harder
Reds lost much more

Finns ceded 11% of land
30% of economic assets
Soviets did not push to move further
Their casualties had been so enormous

Finns lost 26,000 men
Soviets 127,000
Finns had made them pay dearly
For every blood-soaked inch of ground

Talvisota
The Winter War
Finns fought harder
Reds lost much more

Both sides took a well-needed rest
As Nazi Germany plotted
Operation Barbarossa
Continuation War started!!!

Talvisota
The Winter War
Finns fought harder
Still... another war

In the event that the Western Allies would have pushed for intervention in Finland and Sweden, the Germans had already planned to take all of Scandanavia by force. Instead, Sweden even as neutral supplied Germany iron ore and Germany took Norway while Finland became Co-Belligerent. The Allies took Greenland and Iceland and the Soviets got part of Finnish territory...
