The Lyrics

This is my unique entry into the EFG story in my own style. I do not wish to particpate in the other series, but to honor the dead in my own lyrics from an old song and not from making light of it through "What IF X-singer sung"... that's not me. I have covered MS Wilhelm Gustloff, RMS Lancastria, SS Andria Doria, and many U-boats/Wolfpacks here. I do not feel the need to conform...
SS Edmund Fitzgerald
So-called “Mighty Fitz”
Great Lakes Freighter
Nothing but a workhorse ship

Seventeen years haulin’ taconite
From Minnesota mines
To iron works in Detroit, Toledo
Set hauling records six times

Boat watchers liked the DJ captain
Captain Peter Pulcer
Under Captain Ernest M. McSorley
Final voyage from Lake Superior

Nov 9, 1975
Carrying 26,116 tons
She rendezvoused
With freighter Arthur M. Anderson
(Now their fate had just begun)

NWS predicted a storm
For 7am the next day
But by 7pm in the evening
That major storm would blow their way
(To their dismay)

They took the downbound route
1am the massive storm then came
Winds of 60mph
And daunting 10 ft waves

2am she followed the Anderson
But at 3am pulled away
16 miles ahead
Snow now blocked visibility
(for the rest of the day)

330pm Fitzgerald was taking on water
Lost tow vent covers and railing
The ship began to list
And both radars were failing

Captain McSorley was frantic
Called for the USCG
Lost all navigation aids
Sent out an urgent plea
(hailed ships on every frequency)

By 5:30pm she was listing
Assaulted by heavy seas
Winds up top 67 mph
Waves up to 25 ft
(McSorley said it was the worst storm he’d ever seen)

Last communication from the ship
Came at 7:10pm
“We are holding our own”
Minutes later she sank- never seen again
(No distress signal sent, to the bottom she descends)

Fitzgerald lost 29 souls
29 brave men:
- Captain
- First, Second, and Third Mates
- Five Engineers
- Three Oilers
- Cook
- Wiper
- Two Porters
- A Steward
- A Cadet
- Three Watchmen
- Three Deckhands
- Two Maintenance Men
- And Three Wheelsmen

Who were never seen again…

Lake Superior has claimed 240 ships
SS Edmund Fitzgerald just ONE of them...

A worthy entry into our commemoration series. I just learned of a maritime tragedy in the middle of Missouri, some 150 years ago. Will have to do a lot of research before I can write about it. What do you know about the steamboat "Sultana"?

I did one for a ship that sank not far from me, Morro Castle in 1934.

Patrick, not much, would have to look it up- not my specialty which are military vessels and the huge disasters. I like the Ironclads, however, so I could write about those... but still need to do Hitler's yacht Aviso Grille and would like to do the S-boots too. They kicked ass for their size: During World War II the S-boote sank 101 merchant ships totalling 214,728 tons. In addition, they sank 12 destroyers, 11 minesweepers, eight landing ships, six MTBs, a torpedo boat, a minelayer, one submarine and a number of small merchant craft. They also damaged two cruisers, five destroyers, three landing ships, a repair ship, a naval tug and numerous merchant vessels. Sea mines laid by the S-boote were responsible for the loss of 37 merchant ships totalling 148,535 tons, a destroyer, two minesweepers and four landing ships. ~ Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pgmxuPRFcLs/S-IHynN-XyI/AAAAAAAACuw/ZktmYI3D3oI/s1600/Schnellboot+Typ+S.100.+Italeri+1-35+Scale..jpg

Rob - A worthy foray! Fine job. Michael - I know of the Morro Castle. It's speculated that the fire may have been intentional. Patrick - The Sultana was carrying troops and wounded. So many lives lost so close to shore. (No usual grin and wink after broaching such a gruesome subject.)
