The Lyrics

The Old Rover

I had an old Rover for several years,
With a dodgy transmission, and creaky old gears,
And rot in the chassis and rust through the floor,
Oh I never will drive that old Rover no more!

Chorus:

(And it’s) No nay never,
No nay never no more,
Will I drive that old Rover,
No never no more.

I went down to a workshop I used to frequent,
And the man said to me your subframe it is bent,
I asked him to mend it, he answered me nay,
You’d have to pay me to take it away.

Chorus:

And so by the kerbside it just sat and ailed,
‘Til the tax it expired and the MOT failed.
And then the old Rover it got towed away,
By a man in a van from the DVLA.

Chorus:

They sent me a letter and said it’s been crushed.
Creating great clouds of pollution and dust,
It worried me not, they can do what they like,
I think in future I’ll stick to a bike.

Chorus:

Well I missed that old Rover for many a week,
‘Til at the used car lot I took a peek,
And then I succumbed to temptation I fear,
I’m the owner of a “brand new” N reg. Cavalier.

Chorus:

Did it have a Lucas electrical system? ;-)

Yes, all Land Rovers had Lucas electrical systems until the BMW buyout and subsequent Ford of Europe takeover. Land Rovers are actually far more durable than Jonnerrs wrote about (I am an expert on British, Continental European, Soviet Bloc and out-of-production American cars and trucks), but the rigors of the damp British climate definitely take their toll on all cars and trucks. (I live in the USA.) FYI, the "Cavalier" at the end of the parody is not a Chevrolet, but a Vauxhall, which is a British GM product last sold in the US in 1964 and somewhat later than '64 in Canada. DKTOS, but 5s.

On the other hand, Jonnerrs could have written about a Rover car, which I have three of, namely a 1952 right-hand-drive P4 sedan, a 1969 2200 sedan and a (Ferrari-like) 1980 SD1 four-door hatchback. Of course, I live near Las Vegas, so there would be be no rust. The parody seems to take place in the U.K., so it would be rusty. Rover cars lost their (actually reliable when maintained properly) Lucas systems in the 1980s, when Honda-based cars replaced all but the Mini, Maestro, Montego and Metro, which kept their Lucas systems. The Honda-based cars are long gone, as are the "M" quartet. Darrell Wilhelm, 1952 Rover P4, 1969 Rover 2200, 1980 Rover SD1, 1967 Vandenplas Princess Type "R", 1959 Vauxhall Envoy, 1932 Vauxhall Coupe, 1978 Dodge Magnum

Darrell, Thanks for your comments. You are correct it is set in the UK about a Rover 2000 car (C1978). The Cavalier was built by Vauxhall with a 1.8 Opel engine "N Registration" Vehicles were first 1974 as a suffix and 1995 as a suffix (Mine was the 1995 model)

Brilliant, really brilliant. For some reason I could almost hear Jasper Carrott singing it :-)
