The Lyrics

This parody is my 106th on this site but first of Patti Page's biggest hit. It is about the degeneration of the Tennessee Volunteers football team since they fired Phil Fulmer in 2008. During that time, they have seen one coach (Lane Kiffin) bolt for USC after just one season, languished under Derek Dooley for three more and are now coming off yet another bad year under first-year head coach Butch Jones, who was lured away from Cincinnati. Worse yet, they have floundered against afterthought Vanderbilt, whose previous glory days were in the early 20th century and--God forbid--Middle Tennessee State, which didn't even join the ranks of Division I-A (now the FBS) until 1999! Oh well, at least the Vols can beat up on Memphis State...
Philip Fulmer, you should come back
To the Tennessee Vols
'Cos they've missed you these four years, I see.
First came Kiffin, who had been fired
From the Raiders of Oakland,
Before he just left for S.C.

Then came Dooley, who thought
That the Tennessee Vols
Would be just like a walk in the park.
But the three years of much hardship
Left lots of soul searching
On the part of the Tennessee Vols.

They've been losing to old Vandy
Ev'ry year when they've met
And the Raiders of MTSU.
It's no wonder Derek Dooley
Is still unemployed now
And Knoxvillers are going boo-hoo.

Now next year, Jones is back
For the Tennessee Vols,
Who are hoping for the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.
But without a single bowl win
Since 2007,*
All's lost for the Tennessee Vols.
*After losing the SEC title game in 2007 to LSU, the Volunteers defeated Penn State in the New Year's Day 2008 Capital One Bowl.
