The Lyrics

Thanksgiving in the USA is an appropriate time to reflect on the history, present status and future of this nation. In this era of rapid change, optimism must be more muted than the confident original words expressed in 1832.

Note: Every syllable has one and only one note of the melody, unlike TOS.
My country is yet free; its brand of liberty is fleeting thing.
Land where forefathers tried, standing with wills implied, [1]
To elevate its founding tide, getting free from king.

These states united, ex-panded from sea to sea and air above.
Men hove its rocks with drills, plied woods and tamed tall hills.
By starting water-captured mills, nigh wove hat and glove.

Let windmills fill with breeze, standing so tall o'er trees, keep green farms strong.
Let soaring tons we make let all with need partake;
Let docksides export records break for abounding throng.

Our far-flung sod [2] will be haven of liberty to which we cling.
Strong is our land in might if we've some bold insight,
Projecting freedom by our light, not the rod we bring.
[1] They pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor.
[2] Includes the two disconnected states, territories, protectorates and military bases worldwide.

By "drills", I meant not only water, oil and natural gas but also bore holes for dynamite to clear paths and open tunnels for railroads and highways.

Excellent work, Barry. I won't rate this, because the rating scheme calls for a vote on "funny," and this isn't funny, it's uplifting. Thanks very much for reminding us of positive things to keep in mind this Thanksgiving. Thoughts of all the negatives out there tend to overwhelm us.
