Parody Song Title:

"Dave Died"

Parody Written by:

John A. Barry

The Lyrics

Solid rock of jazz exemplified by fifties. . .
shucks, Dave died!
Busy in his late eighties,
and his music was so alive.

Making music near every day,
energy never went astray.
Even though he just passed away
I love to listen to him play.

When I’m sittin’ down on my seat,
tappin’ with the toes on my feet,
tryin’ to count that 9/8 beat
with my head asway.

With age he got better;
harmonies were so tight.
And so on amiright
I offer this commendation now
Things ain’t bright ’cause Dave died.
[Bad] luck! Dave died.

Take five - not just once, but three times! This song is an extremely difficult to make lyrics, as 5/4 meter is pretty rare. You made neat work. Dave Brubeck and his quartet will always remain of the great renovators of jazz. I love the original song, and I have it on LP - yup, the vinyl one.

Thanks, Susanna. 9/8 is the meter of "Blue Rondo à la Turk," but I should have used 5/4, the meter of "Take Five," in the parody.

I don't think lyrics exist for this song, so you made some. You responded within a day of this great elder statesman of 'college jazz's' death. You checked the time signatures he made commercially viable. For all this, take fives from me too.
