The Lyrics

The Shi'ite religious observance of 'Ashura, where observers flagellate themselves in mourning for the slaying of Hussein, grandson of Muhammad, by the Caliph Yazid, occurred about a week ago. A couple of years ago, when I wrote this, this dark ritual occurred right in the middle of our own Christmas season, which triggered this parody. Try to picture Bing Crosby and the Lennon Sisters singing this.
Believer wail, are ya listenin'
On their backs, blood is glistenin'
A beautiful sight
We're frenzied tonight
Walkin' in a Shi'ite wonderland

Gone away is my plain shirt
Here to stay; blood stained shirt
We sing a sad verse
As the bleeding gets worse
Walkin' in a Shi'ite wonderland

On your forehead we can make some blood flow
And pretend that you're Imam Hussein
You'll say "Are you Sunnis", we'll say "Hell no!"
We've been beatin' ourselves for hours with this chain

Later on, we'll be poundin'
On our chests as we're houndin'
The evil Yazid
And his unholy deed
Walkin' in a Shi'ite wonderland

On your forehead we'll increase the blood flow
And pretend that you're the 12th Iman
We'll have lots of fun with Mr Imam
Till he goes back into hiding once again

Later on, we'll conspire
As we scrub down our attire
To treat unafraid
All the skin that we flayed
Walkin' in a Shi'ite Wonderland
This is still timely as the Shi'ites have entered a 40 day mourning period, which ends with another day of flagellation known as Arba'een

CML, you sure have a way with words when it comes to our enemies in the ME-555! I ususally stick to Israel and the West with added weapons and politics :)

Ain't religion grand?! Could have been titled "Floggin' in a Skinnin' Sunder Plan."

Someday, maybe we'll get lucky and the fools will beat themselves all to death.

Oy, where are my manners! (palmheeling self on forehead) Thank you everybody and "alaf ashkur" (a thousand thank yous) in particular to Robert for that high praise. I spun about five of these "Islamas carol" parodies in short order three years ago when Islamic New Year was smack dab in the middle of our Christmas season, which meant this particular Shi'ite ritual was coinciding with our own New Year's

Ashuram weary of pointless traditions. Bah! Humbug! 555 for thematic originality here.
