The Lyrics

Being the first of a series of Cantabrigian parodies based on Colleges. CUSU = Cambridge University Students' Union. Varsity = Cambridge student newspaper famous for backing lost causes week after week and then dropping them abruptly as soon as they actually fail.
King's College is a pretty one that tourists come to see
But the students there are all far gone on left wing lunacy
They table crazy motions in the meetings of CUSU
About things like the War with which it has nothing to do
They're a bore, they just hold up the meetings
Oh, I must get away out of King's

The hammers and the sickles painted in the College Bar
Will remind you if you forget exactly where you are
If their jukebox plays Lennon, well, that's hardly an offence
But what bothers me is some of them think his views make sense
So I'd sooner listen to Paul MacCartney and Wings
Oh, I must get away out of King's

They try to 'No Platform'
All the things they dislike
When that strategy fails
Then they have a rent strike
Varsity's now gone quiet on that
So I assume it fell flat

The world works on TO EACH according to ability
And rightly so, but that's a truth that Kingsmen fail to see
The way they run their finances, it really is a joke
So is it any wonder that they've now gone stony broke?
It's their own fault, 'cause their politics mings
Oh, I must get away out of King's
The next most crying-out-to-be-parodied College in Cambridge is Peterhouse. Any suggestions as to a song in which its name would scan properly would be most welcome.

"be our guest" comes to mind for peterhouse

King's College is hardly unique among institutions of higher learning in having a left wing orientation, but I like the way you poke fun at it. How about "Master of the House" from Les Miserables for Peterhouse?

The one that jumped immediately to mind for Peterhouse is Desmond Dekker's The Israelites...

If you hate that, don't go to York either. Students are all looneys, including me :) I like this, very amusing!

Good suggestions, but can't use 'Israelites' as denizens of Peterhouse are known as Petreians - using 'Israelites' for a College that uses the suffix -ites for its members (Newnham or Downing - not yet decided which). So far, for Christ's College have one submitted for review to the tune of 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. On Xmas Day and Boxing Day when I'm stuck in the house I intend to do the following parodies, which are floating round half-finished in my head: New Hall (Aerosmith's 'Rag Doll'), Robinson (Mrs, of course), and Gonville and Caius (to the tune of 'Food, Glorious Food' as their catering is notoriously bad). Having real problems with Trinity and St. John's: intend to lump them together in one song if I can as each thinks it's the most important College and really hates the other, so granting neither a separate song and putting the bitter rivals together would really piss them off. Tried 'The Ballad of Tom Jones' but the chorus didn't scan.
