The Lyrics

Twelve long years and my mind is still... wondering why they didn't just call the song "What's Going On?" It's not like it would've been the first time there were two great songs with the same title. "Twenty-five years" refers to the 1980 election of the disastrous Ronald Reagan and the Congressional freshmen known as the Reagan Robots, led by Jerry Falwell and his "Moral" "Majority" -- the beginning of the revolution that has now reached depths that not even people as liberal as I am feared possible.
Twenty-five years and the right wing still
acting so bad on Capitol Hill
those dopes... screwing up our nation.

And I realized quickly when I knew I should
those Republicans are just no good
no, man
for what little that helps.

And so I steam sometimes
at their lying so much
wanna get 'em all out
bigotry's their crutch
their religious views a little peculiar.

And so I wake up in the morning
and I go outside
with their every breath
justice is denied
and I scream at Bush and his bums
"What's going wrong?"

And I say
Oy, yi, yi, yi
Oy, yi, yi, yi
I say oy...
What's going wrong?

And I say
Oy, yi, yi, yi
Oy, yi, yi, yi
I say oy...
What's going wrong?

And they lie!
Oh, my God, do they lie!
Right-wing girls and guys
belong in institution!
And they pray!
"No," says God, "not that way!"
For in that way
lies His retribution!

And so I steam sometimes
at their lying so much
wanna get 'em all out
bigotry's their crutch
their religious views a little peculiar.

And so I wake up in the morning
and I go outside
with their every breath
justice is denied
and I scream at Bush and his bums
"What's going wrong?"

And I say
(And so I steam sometimes)
Oy, yi, yi, yi
(at their lying so much)
Oy, yi, yi, yi
(wanna get 'em all out)
I say oy...
(bigotry's their crutch)
What's going wrong?
(their religious views a little peculiar.)

And I say
(And so I wake up in the morning and I go outside)
Oy, yi, yi, yi
(with their every breath justice is denied)
Oy, yi, yi, yi
(and I scream at Bush and his bums)
I say oy...
("What's going wrong?")
What's going wrong?

Twenty-five years and the right wing still
acting so bad on Capitol Hill
those dopes... screwing up our nation.

I'm having a DKTOS day today, so although I read the parodies in alphabetical order this is one of the first I've read. Your nineties parodies are really good (I don't know TOS to 90% of your sixties), this made me giggle. But what in the heck is "oy yi yi yi"? Please tell me!

Yo, Michael, were the comments in the Malcolm Higgins "Cheese or Gravy" parody of Tom Jones' "She's a Lady" two years ago really from you? Because it doesn't sound like you.

"Oy yi yi yi" -- usually just "Oy" or "Oy yi yi," never "Oy yi" -- basically means, "Oh no..." Or, if you prefer, "Oh s---!" Malcolm's "Cheese Or Gravy"? Yes, that really was me. I was being sarcastic. See, because Jacques Chirac, President of France, refused to help our illegitimate chief executive Georgie Bush (a.k.a. "Bush 43" -- that's not just his sequential number, it's his current approval rating) fight an immoral war in Iraq, a bunch of closed-minded Americans decided that anything French was scum. Example, "French fries" became "Freedom fries." Which led to someone revealing that the original recipe comes not from France, but from Belgium. (I also know that, in Paris, a quarter pounder with cheese is actually "un royale avec fromage," not "a royale with cheese.") So I was playing along with the joke. In truth, most Americans have some respect for the French. Perhaps you should consider yourself lucky: Most of the time, we never even think about the Netherlands. Except when we want chocolate. Or we want to rail against easy access to drugs.
