The Lyrics

With friends like these, who needs entertainment facilities?
I've never needed cable

Since I was young, I didn't have a real need for that stupid box that's called a TV
Because in real life, I had the perfect little stage, ev'rybody that I called a mate would put on plays
Not lit'rally true, I would simply notice that my group of friends weren't the tightest knitted dudes
Zero twee happy-smiley bullshit, so many scenes ripped right outta the shows my mum loved to bits
Never been arsed to learn why exactly they're "soap" op'ras, knew they were stuffed full of drama
Who needs a script or cheesy-ass stock music swells when you can get drama at the stairwell?
We might be in elementary, hey, means words are rudimentary, okay?
Can still say "you're not my friend", that's right, drama-tastic though we just aged outta naptime
And since ev'ry day, I'd see drama, it felt like I'd always need drama
It felt completely bland on the days when things were breezy, peace just made me sad
That age, could not express it, not too sure that I was that aware how my brain was tickin'
But it's stayed with me, never cracked, always had people 'round me puttin' on an act, I've never needed cable

Crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah) how it's always happened (free drama)
So crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah), not technic'lly actin' (I've never needed cable)
So crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah) but it keeps on happ'nin'

It takes a lotta effort not to stare when out comes the madness, someone had a new affair
Or moved away or just stupid fights, pointless anger, still invested like it was major
The weirdest part? It ain't stoppin', moved away but it seems that I keep attractin' folks who love
Yellin' things loud, pretty nuts, whether college or work buds, it's like the cam'ra won't cut
Always some kinda plot twist hangin' around the corner, can almost hear gasps they've been cannin'
Since the 50's, could be my own, would be odd since they should hear that, I'm not standin' far off
Because they're my friends and when friends are true, you don't stand there like a mullet that's been stunned, tell ya
So that's why I'm thrown that they care for me since I'm not part of the show that they've all made for me
I'm just an extra, wouldn't get an intro slate, not in the credits, not a blip on the fans' plates
And they know that I keep track of their bullshit, the drama that never quits that keeps me livin'
And yet they still pop up on my phone, askin' my ass for a lift to their home
It's kinda strange but I'm fine with that, wish I had popcorn stashes all around, it's mad, I've never needed cable

Crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah), they swear they're not actin' (free drama)
So crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah), they've just got the magic (I've never needed cable)
So crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah) that it keeps on happ'nin'

I have been tempted just a little bit to get things started when a lull has begun with the drama
Just nudge things back into focus because withdrawal is, lemme tell ya, bogus
But then I think, as a little kid, I would get ranty to my mum 'bout the things I witnessed
I've got this real clear memory of her eyes gettin' big, she was scared for me
Didn't write me off as crazy but she still took a big step to save me
All that it took was a specific film reel then a talk on just how it had made me feel
The Truman Show was great, it amazed me but then the message struck, rearranged me
Treatin' peoples lives like playin' games, not for my entertainment, yikes, in no way okay
If I need to get out my need to force stuff, just become a Dungeon Master and roll on
And to this day I have not turned back on that plan and it's meant I've never gone that mad, I've never needed cable

Crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah), I won't force the magic (free drama)
So crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah), they keep shit dramatic (I've never needed cable)
So crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah) that they're not just actin' (free drama)
So crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah, free drama), crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah)
Crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah), crazy (ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah)

I haven't actually watched The Truman Show but because I know everything that happens I'm not sure what I'd get out of it besides ticking a box. Which is my approach to a lot of things, now that I think about it.
