The SdKfz 234/1 began as a heavy armor car with a turret that housed a 20mm KwK 38 L/55 (200 rds) of which 200 were produced for armed recon. It was a 8x8 vehicle used in N Africa and in Russia. But soon the turret was modified to take bigger guns and this resulted in the SdKfz 234/2 Puma with the 50mm Kwk 39/1 L/60 (50 rds). It was fast at 80 km/hr and had good armor up to 1.5". 101 more of these were produced. And finally, the SdKfz 234/3 featured either a short 75mm Kwk 51 L/24 or long Pak 40 L/46 (the former with 50 rds and the latter with 12 rds). 177 more of these were produced. All 478 of these vehicles saw combat and were formidible, especially the latter two types. They gave good fire support and performed AT duties.
