I read a book on world-wide gun laws which says that Egypt is awash in illegal weapons. Why do the opponents of the regime continue to gather in huge crowds and make themselves easy targets? There are better tactics for dealing with the situation.

I liked Mubarak even if he did commit some crimes. He is the far lesser evil than Morsi and the Brotherhood trying to change Egypt into an Islamist nation= no progress, back to the dark ages. Same for Iran. Shame to see the Shah go. Repression and individual rights then got worse unless you are an Islamic fanatic willing to die for Allah. As far as weapons go, the US rewarded Egypt for Gulf War participation and gave them tanks, missiles, small arms, and annually trains with them. There are also the old stockpiles from all sorts of invaders. Like Afghanistan very easy to get vintage in Egypt whether Mauser, Springfield, Nagant or AK, FAL... even black powder weapons!!!
