At the Vectren Air Show near Dayton a pilot Charles Schwenker and female wing-walker Jane Wicker lost their lives in front of a horrified crowd when their Stearman failed to recover from an inverted position and instead tilted and then nose-dived into the ground. Both were killed instantly upon impact as the aircraft erupted in flames. Wing-walking was made popular in the years after WW1, usually with a J4N “Jenny” and both male and female stunt people. It used to be a crowd favorite along with Barnstorming in the 1920s-30s using biplanes. But post-WW2 people wanted to see jet aircraft acrobatics instead and the FAA required a long list of added safety precautions when performing wing-walking. Still, Jane Wicker died sitting on a wing inverted- no recovery.
