The Lyrics

Written on the Long Island Rail Road -- as was Harry Chapin's song "Mail-Order Annie," although under very different circumstances. I was coming back from a 4th of July celebration at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, home of President Theodore Roosevelt, with a very convincing TR impersonator on hand. In order to get back to Penn Station, I had to transfer at Jamaica, Queens, and, naturally, I started singing, "Aruba, Jamaica, ooh, I wanna take ya..." And it developed from there. In 1964, the Drifters sang of Coney Island in "Under the Boardwalk." Today, New York City still has beaches, but... uh...
Astoria, Jamaica, ooh, I wanna take ya
to Corona and Flushing, baby girl, I'm gushing
Kew Gardens and Woodside, I'll get on your good side
Jamaica!

On the south side of Queens
there's a place called Rockaway
that's where we wanna go
for our beach getaway.

Bodies in the sand.
Old men with T-shirts and high waistbands.
We'll be falling in love
to the rhythm of a bad rap band.
Down in Rockaway.

Astoria, Jamaica, ooh, I wanna take ya
to Corona and Flushing, baby girl, I'm gushing
Kew Gardens and Woodside, I'll get on your good side
Down in Rockaway!
We'll go downstairs into the old subway!
On train with letter A!
Go down to Rockaway!

No Jackson Heights, we'll find some hotter nights!

We'll drift out to sea
that's polluted by chemistry.
By and by, it's a lie that this trip's full of levity.
Women, fat, not light.
Bathing suits, they squeeze in tight.
That queasy look your eye
it is not so hard to wonder why
down there in Rockaway.

Shea Stadium.
I think I stepped in gum.

(saxophone break -- at least, I hope that was gum)

It's past JFK
Airport and Jamaica Bay.
Now if you wanna play
but not have fun at all
go down to Rockaway.

(repeat 'til fade)
Yes, I know, I've used the Shea Stadium/gum rhyme before: http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/stevegoodman0.shtml. I needed another Queens name.
