Song Parodies -> "Portmanteaus"

Original Song Title:

"Short People"

Original Performer:

Randy Newman

Parody Song Title:

"Portmanteaus"

Parody Written by:

John A. Barry

The Lyrics

Portmanteau. "Motel" is one,
Portmanteau. "Motel" is one,
Portmanteau. "Motel" is one.
What gives?

You take "hotel" and
"H" excise.
And from "motor"
You take the first of five
Letters, and then impose
The "M" in front of these
Left with "H" removed
From "hotel." What you sees--

A new word, it's a portmanteau.
"Motel"'s a portmanteau,
"Motel"'s a portmanteau,
So's "bleen."

Portmanteau is just a name
That is derived
(Norman Conquest long-lived)
From our French brothers
That we've sometimes haut-fived.
(They're such wonderful words)

Portmanteaus, like "dramedy,"
Portmanteaus, such as "fugly,"
Portmanteaus, such as "mingy,"
There's some.

They can be 'bout fruit and veg,
Like "tangelo."
Blend "ghetto" and "retro,"
You get "ghettro."
Then there's "carboloy,"
And CREEP, CREEP, CREEP--
No, that's an acronym,
Unlike "veep" or "Jeep,"
Which were once abbreviations. . .
Became words in time.
Make one up; marching time: "marime."

Okay John--I really did want to get this, but I'm just too dumb. It's kind of refreshing to admit it, actually. Have a nice day!

555. I think the plural is "portmanteaux" as the original is French. This song wasn't too fickle [you know, five + nickel], I think...

I'm glad I understood this. I could have been a victim of "sarchasm" here.

Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.

I really like how you put the thoughts together in this one John. Brilliant effort.
